Symbols that describe the legacy of Bhutan “The Land Of Thunder Dragon”

Bhutan is a tiny kingdom of South Asia, surrounded by many countries, including India and China among them. Popular for hosting rich Buddhist tradition and culture, it is a nation present in the lap of the Himalayas. Not only has the popularity stood due to major tourist attractions, but also for unique traditions and culture, with adventurous sport activities running in parallel. Thimphu being the capital, is also the largest city in the country. Other than that you have cities like Damphu, Paro, Punakha, Trongsa, Trashigang, Mongar, Jakar, etc. well connected to Thimphu.
Coming to our main topic of discussion are the Bhutan sacred symbols wherein we will be talking about four of them – national symbol i.e. Druk (Dragon), national emblem, national anthem, and national flag. Bhutan Flag

Divided diagonally into 2 sections, there is a white dragon present right at the center. Upper diagonal has a yellow color, while lower one is orange. Both yellow and orange colors represent the spiritual tradition, while white color stands for peace. The aggressiveness of roaring dragon represents the fighting spirit of Bhutan against worldly evils, in turn protecting them. Additionally, when you look closer, you will observe jewels in the clutches of the dragon that symbolizes wealth and prosperity within the country.

Bhutan Emblem

This is a circular structure with 2 vajras or in other words “diamond thunderbolts” kept over a lotus. Two white cum yellow dragons with one male and another female, are on the outside layer, with jewels present on the inside surmounting the vajras. Vajras represent harmony between political powers and religious traditions; lotus stands for purity, jewels presenting sovereign power, and two dragons representing the country Bhutan, also known as The Land of Thunder Dragon.

Bhutan Anthem

The national anthem of Bhutan is Druk Tsendhen (The Thunder Dragon Kingdom), written by Dasho Gyaldun Thinley and composed by Aku Tongmi. The adoption of this anthem took place way back in 1953.
